You don’t have to know everything, but you do need to surround yourself with the people who do. Outside of the gospel and my wife’s acceptance to my marriage proposal, the above advice is the best sentence I’ve heard.
As EvanTell started to grow years ago, I became overwhelmed with what I did not know. At those times I thought to myself, “If Billy Graham were here, he would know how to do this.” As I researched ministries, though, I discovered that as those ministries grew, the leaders also did not know how to handle many issues.
The chairman of the EvanTell board at the time then said something to me that immensely impacted my life—and my leadership: “You don’t have to know everything, just surround yourself with the people who do.” Quite frankly, I felt like I had died and gone to heaven! That was one of the most exciting things I had ever been told.
I resolved that that was exactly what I would do. I would hire people who knew more than I did. I knew where I was gifted, but I also knew where I needed help. I hired people who were strong in those areas. Did EvanTell ever start to flourish! There was a strong team at the top that could handle anything and everything that came across our path.
Don’t think you have to know everything or pretend like you do. Instead, consistently hire people who know more than you do and listen and work with them. The results will be exciting!
